Independent Medical Systems Ltd. (IMS) complies fully with all current
requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA),
Public Law 104-191, which became law in August 1996.
HIPAA was designed to:
- Simplify the processing and distribution of medical information, such as
claims, enrollment and payment advice.
- Improve the portability of health insurance, including the removal of
penalties for changing jobs.
- Give patients access to their own medical information.
- Protect patient data that is stored, processed or transmitted.
In regard to its provisions, however, HIPAA also created standards for the
electronic exchange of administrative and financial healthcare transactions and
the security of individual health information. It created code sets for encoding
data elements, such as tables of medical concepts and diagnostic and procedure
codes, and it provided unique identification numbers for healthcare providers
and employers for use in healthcare transactions.
Deadlines for providers and employers to meet some of these standards have
already occurred. Others are still ahead. We understand the importance of HIPAA
requirements and are up-to-date in meeting all federal requirements and will
continue to do so in order to protect all clients’ health information.
